Start-up/Commissioning Technician

Houston, TX

Start-up/Commissioning Technician is responsible for implementing the building automation system programming, starting-up mechanical systems and initiating sequences of operation, commissioning overall functionality of the systems as they pertain to building operation, and general quality control of the installation. Accountable to ensure facilities are complete and operating properly for the end owner and for DAC.

Principal Duties

  • Review design criteria, specifications, drawings, equipment submittals, and other documentation pertinent to system installation start-up and commissioning
  • Coordinate with software development, project manager and installation teams
  • Write and administer Quality Assurance Plans
  • Develop and administer functional testing of HVAC, Plumbing and/or Electrical Systems
  • Develop and administer functional testing of DDC/PLC Control Systems and Sequences
  • System and equipment troubleshooting
  • Proactive problem identification and resolution
  • Observing startup activities / management of vendors
  • Test data collection and presentation – Commissioning and other report contribution/development
  • Administer project closeout and coordinate handoff to Service Division


  • A minimum of 5 years field experience in hands-on testing, troubleshooting of large HVAC and Electrical systems
  • Bachelor’s (engineering, computer science) degree preferred but will substitute significant years of experience for exceptional candidates. This experience would include commissioning or designing of large HVAC and or Electrical systems
  • Strong understanding of building automation, laboratory control and mechanical airside and waterside system operations
  • LEED commissioning experience. Experience with ASHRAE and/or Cx procedures and protocols a plus
  • Must know the capabilities of the control system being installed by the company
  • Must understand Building Automation Control theory. Must have general product and industry knowledge necessary to make related construction decisions
